Bristly Charm

Warthogs are full of character. Their curved tusks, warty bumps, and long manes give them such a distinctive presence. They carry a rugged charm all their own.

Pumbaa from The Lion King gave me a new appreciation for warthogs.

Pumbaa is wonderfully lovable: kind, joyful, sincere, playful, and optimistic. He accepts himself, and he accepts others too. He is fun and full of life, humble yet strong, with an open and generous heart.

Those are wonderful traits for any being to carry, and qualities I would love to carry more fully myself. Although real animals may not express all of these traits, they have fascinating personalities and emotional lives we are still learning to understand.

As I worked on this drawing, I kept finding myself singing Hakuna Matata. Now the tune dances through my mind and makes me smile whenever I look at this piece. It feels like a cheerful little reminder to relax, enjoy life, and carry fewer worries.
